INSTALLATION AND STARTUP GUIDE
for
OASIS
(OWL Automated Sales and Invoicing System)
VERSION 3
Copyright 1994 All Rights Reserved
This guide covers installation and startup of OWL Automated Sales &
Invoicing System (OASIS) Version 3. The complete User's Guide is
built into the program and is accessed by selecting the "USER'S
GUIDE" option.
SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
OASIS requires an IBM Compatible PC, DOS 3.3 or above, a hard
disk and approximately 500K of available conventional of RAM
memory.
DOS CONFIGURATION
For proper operation, you MUST HAVE the file "CONFIG.SYS" in the
root directory of your start-up disk and it MUST contain the
line "FILES=31" (values above 31 are acceptable). If file
"CONFIG.SYS" does not exist in the root directory of your hard
disk, you can create it by typing:
COPY CON: C:\CONFIG.SYS
FILES=31
Ctrl-Z (Press "Ctrl" and "Z" keys together)
If file CONFIG.SYS already exists, use a text editor to view and
modify the file as needed. Once you have added or edited the
"CONFIG.SYS" file, YOU MUST RE-BOOT your computer for the
changes to take effect. Consult your DOS manual for additional
information.
UPGRADES FROM EARLIER VERSIONS
VERY IMPORTANT: If you are upgrading from an earlier version of
OASIS and wish to transfer your existing data to the new
version, you MUST run the BACKUP option from your current
version of OASIS before installing the new version. If you
previously used the INVOICE/ARCHIVE function to archive invoice
data, select the INVOICE/DE-ARCHIVE option and dearchive all
invoice data prior to running the BACKUP option. Once you have
converted this data to the new version, you may rearchive the
data as needed.
INSTALLATION
The program, data, and help files are contained in self
extracting archive files. To extract the contents of these
files and install them on your hard disk, place the distribution
diskette in drive A and type the following commands:
A:
INSTALLA C
You may install the program from the B drive by substituting
"B:" for "A:" in the above and you may install the files to a
hard drive other than C by substituting the appropriate drive
letter for "C" in the above. (Note: there is no colon following
the hard drive letter). All required files will be installed in
a subdirectory named "\OWL" on the designated hard drive.
RUNNING THE PROGRAM
To run OASIS type the following commands:
C:
CD \OWL
OASIS
If you installed the program on a hard drive other than C,
substitute the appropriate drive letter for "C:" in the above.
SAMPLE DATA
The data files shipped with the program contain sample data
which is provided to help you become familiar with the various
options and capabilities of the program. The sample data covers
calendar year 1994.
TRANSFERRING EARLIER VERSION DATA:
If you are upgrading from an OASIS Version earlier than Version
3.0, chose the "Setup" option in the file menu followed by the
"Convert Version 1/2 Data" option. The following menu allows
you to specify if you are upgrading from Version 1 or Version 2.
Select the appropriate option.
If you are upgrading from Version 1, you will be asked to enter
a "Customer Group" name for those customers that were included
in mass mailings in Version 1 followed by a "Customer Group"
name for those customers that were not included in mass mailings
in Version 1. Note that you can change these group name
designations later when editing your customer list.
The conversion process gives you a choice of marking items in
the Version 3 products database as either taxable or non-
taxable. Select the status that fits the majority of items in
your product database. After the conversion is complete, use
the product/edit option to change the taxable status of any
products that do not fit your choice.
The final step in the conversion process is a manual one that
involves editing any existing invoices that included both
taxable and non-taxable items. This is an optional step and
only effects the taxable sales column of the sales summary
report. Edit the invoice items that were non-taxable to mark
them as non-taxable.
If you are upgrading from Version 3.x to Version 3.x+, you may
transfer your existing data by from your Version 3.x backup
floppy disk by choosing the "Restore" option in the file menu.
TROUBLE SHOOTING
The following is a brief list of errors that may be encountered
and what to do about them.
Out of Memory or Low Memory: You don't have enough memory below
640K to run the program. If your computer has at least 512K of
RAM, you should be able to eliminate this problem by removing
memory resident programs (TSR'S) and device drivers (mouse
drivers, network drivers, etc.) to free up memory.
Program Aborts with Message (DOS error 04): This means that
insufficient DOS file handles have been specified. If you have
already added the line FILES=31 to your CONFIG.SYS file AND
rebooted your computer, try increasing the number a few at a
time. Reboot your computer each time you increase the number.
Program Locks up or screen becomes distorted: The mouse display
software in OASIS can cause problems with some displays. Adding
switches to the command line that cause OASIS to use a non-
graphic mouse cursor can sometimes solve this problem. Try
running OASIS with the following command:
OASIS /nv /ng
Mouse doesn't work: Your mouse driver is probably quite old and
out of date. Contact your mouse vendor for an updated driver.
Other Errors: If at any time you are unable to resolve a
problem with this program, call or write us a letter explaining
the nature of the problem. Please also include a description of
your computer configuration including any TSR programs which are
installed. Send all correspondence to:
